GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE DEPARTMENT OF LITERATURE

The Department of Literature Graduate School offers three degree programs: 1) Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing (MFACREA), 2) Master of Arts in Literary, Cultural and Performance Studies (MALCPS), and 3.) Doctor of Philosophy in Literature (PHD LITT).

The MFACREA program is designed to help students committed to further honing their craft and becoming productive, creative writers through a grounding in the theoretical and practical aspects of writing.

The MALCPS program aims to nurture scholars who demonstrate critical and creative thinking skills and possess adequate knowledge of literary forms and traditions and critical or theoretical concepts and perspectives crucial to studying and appreciating literature, culture, and performance.

The PHD LITT program aims to develop competent and responsible literary scholars by providing training in research and literary criticism, creative writing, and cultural studies with opportunities for sustained investigation of aspects of literature and literary history, particularly that of the Philippines, and supervision in the production of research projects that will be vital contributions to the fields of literary/cultural studies and production.

Important Information for Prospective Graduate Students of the Department of Literature:

According to the relevant student information found in the 2025 Student Handbook, specifically, Section 15.1, a full-time graduate student can enroll a maximum of twelve (12) units while part-time graduate students can enroll for a maximum of nine (9) units. However, the number of full-time or part-time load of graduate students in the Department of Literature is subject to change at the discretion of the department. Available course offerings per term are affected by the most updated student number, student-to-faculty ratio, student and faculty availability, and other circumstances considered by the department in order to preserve academic standards while ensuring the general availability of courses for students to enroll under each program. In other words, a maximum full-time and part-time load of 12 and 9 units per term, respectively is not guaranteed. Currently, graduate students in the department can only take a maximum of 6 units per term since all graduate courses offered by the department are scheduled on Saturdays where the majority of graduate students who have full-time work outside DLSU are available.
