MENGG CHE Curriculum
Program Background
The Master of Engineering Program (MEng) is a practice-oriented degree program which emphasizes the application of theories and methods to actual problems encountered in the practice of the chemical engineering profession. This program requires mastering a field of specialization through coursework and an industry internship or practicum (capstone) project. The capstone project must demonstrate the application of chemical engineering principles to real-world problems. The project may be a solution to a specific problem in an industry or company, a development project that can be of use to the community, academe or government or non-government organizations.

MENGG CHE Major Courses (Core)
| Course Code | Course Title | Brief Description |
| CHE612M | Advanced Fluid Mechanics | This course deals will the advance concepts of momentum transfer, mechanics and dynamics of the flow system. This applies concepts of transport phenomena to simulate and characterize the behavior of the flow of fluids and transfer of momentum. |
| CHE613M | Advanced Heat Transfer | The course deals with the study of the fundamental concepts of steady-state heat transfer by conduction, convection and radiation. After the review off the fundamental concepts, application of the concepts in designs of heat exchangers, evaporators and radiators will be introduced. It also includes an introduction to transient heat transfer and heat exchanger network synthesis (Pinch Technology). |
| CHE614M | Advanced Mass Transfer | This course reviews the basic principles of mass transfer and updates on its current trends. Both molecular and macroscopic principles will be covered highlighting the unifying principles underlying mass transport and properties. Here, the students will also be exposed to new and timely research topics related to mass transfer. For PhD, a different set of requirements will be given. |
| CHE615M | Advanced Reaction Engineering | The course consists of (1) a review of the fundamentals of chemical reaction kinetics and chemical reactor design; (2) an overview of mass- and heat-transport effects in multi-phase systems;(3) an overview of chemical reactor dynamics and steady-state analysis. |
| CHE616M | Optimization Methods in Chemical Engineering | This subject covers various optimization concepts and methodologies applied to the design and synthesis of various engineering systems. Techniques are illustrated using case studies through a variety of learning strategies, including lectures on theoretical foundations and problem-based learning through realistic case studies solved with appropriate computer software. Students may also be asked to attend alternative classes, or do independent study where appropriate. |
| CHE618M | Advanced Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics | This course deals with the properties of fluids and mixtures, concentrating on solution thermodynamics. A review of the fundamental principles of equilibrium, laws of thermodynamics, and application of molecular concepts constitutes the introduction to the course. Computer-based software will also be incorporated. An introduction to statistical thermodynamics will also be included. |
| CHE681M | Advanced Process Control | In the early part of the course a review of basic process control theories will be done. After the review, then advance concepts such as cascade control, Feedforward Feedback Control, Smit Predictor, Internal Mode Control and other advance control strategies will be discussed. Discrete control analysis will be introduced. Computing tools for control such as Matlab and other process simulations software will be introduced. The students will learn simulations of simple and complex systems using Control Toolbox or Matlab Simulink. Simulation and control of various chemical engineering processes will be introduced. |
MENGG CHE Major Courses
| Course Code | Course Title | Brief Description |
| CHE621M | Membrane Separation Process | This course will enable students to understand basic principles in membrane science and technology. The topics to be covered include the basic principle common to all membrane processes (membrane science) and the different industrial membrane separation process (membrane technology). Key concepts that will be covered include the different membrane separation mechanisms, the different transport models, membrane materials and preparations, and the current membrane technology (i.e., microfiltration, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, gas separation, pervaporation, ion-exchange membrane, etc.). |
| CHE631M | Electrochemical Process | Theory of Electrolytic and electro-chemical process under ideal and non-ideal conditions is discussed applications in chemical synthesis, electricity generation and other fields are covered. |
| CHE664M | Waste Water Engineering | This course covers municipal and industrial water and wastewater treatment. Topics include water processing, characteristics of wastewater, requirements for disposal, wastewater treatment involving physical, chemical, biological, and advanced treatment processes and sludge processing. Emphasis is given to design and operational parameters. A wastewater treatment Plant Design Project is required. |
| CHE686M | Product and Process Design for Environmental Engineering | The course is an introductory course of design for environment (DfE) as applied to the assessment of product or process alternatives. DfE is undertaken using life cycle analysis (LCA) and other sustainability concepts (e.g., P2/CP or pollution prevention/cleaner production) that are illustrated through case studies, software demos, and product dissection projects. An integrated, problem-based approach is employed and students are expected to make use of available LCA programs for the analysis of real or realistic case studies. |
| CHE694M | Green Process Engineering: Progress and Development | This course aims to update the techniques and unit operations on chemical and process engineering to improve the sustainability of process design and engineering, as well as to appreciate why it is needed. Here, new and embellish concepts and unit operations that can be applied to a range of industries will be presented and how these can be applied to specific industries thereafter will be shown. |
| CHE710M | Energy Engineering | This course deals with the world and national energy resources, conversion, uses, conservation techniques (at home, in transportation, and in industrial and commercial sectors), and interfuel substitution. |
| CHE818M | Advances in Tissue Engineering for Regenerative Medicine | The course covers principles and practice of tissue engineering in the context of regenerative medicine. It reviews biomolecular features of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and the underpinnings of cell-cell and cell-ECM interactions to help guide in the material design and strategies for synthesis of tissue scaffolds for organ and tissue regeneration. Differentiated cell types and stem cells are discussed and compared as are natural and synthetic bioscaffolds. Methods for fabricating tissue-engineered products for implantation are discussed.
