MEP ME Curriculum

Program Background

The Master of Engineering Program (MEP) is a practice-oriented degree program which emphasizes the application of theories and methods to actual problems encountered in the practice of the mechanical engineering profession. This program requires mastering a field of specialization through coursework and an industry internship or practicum (capstone) project. The capstone project must demonstrate the application of mechanical engineering principles to real-world problems. The project may be a solution to a specific problem in an industry or company, a development project that can be of use to the community, academe or government or non-government organizations.

It will include different types of nanomaterials that are commonly used in modifying the material matrix composites. The major thrust would be the challenges in manufacturing low-cost real-life components in industrial applications, commercial success stories, its impact on current established material market, and future directions. The course will consist of lecture notes and assessment is thru assigned problem sets and a final exam.
MEE620M Mechanical System Design with Optimization Technique This subject covers various optimization concepts and methodologies applied to the design of mechanical systems. Techniques are illustrated using case studies through a variety of learning strategies, including lectures on theoretical foundations and problem-based learning through realistic case studies solved with appropriate computer software. Students may also be asked to attend alternative classes, do independent study or go on field trips, where appropriate.
MEE825M Introduction to Nanotechnology for ME Nanotechnology is an emerging field of applied science that engages almost every technical discipline in biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering – in the study and application of extremely tiny materials with particle sizes ranging from ~1-100 nm. This course will cover the fundamentals of nanoscience and nanotechnology from historical development, concepts and principles to nanomaterial manufacturing and property characterization, and the application of nanotechnology in food science, agriculture, environment, and other applications.
MEE626M Computational Fluid Dynamics in Mechanical Engineering This subject covers various computational fluid dynamics concepts and methodologies applied to the design and analysis of mechanical systems. Techniques are illustrated using case studies through a variety of learning strategies, including lectures on theoretical foundations and problem-based learning through realistic case studies solved with appropriate computer software. Students may also be asked to attend alternative classes related to the topic.
MEE570M Advanced Thermodynamics This subject covers reacting mixtures and combustion, chemical and phase equilibrium as well as design of thermal systems. In thermal system design, the two first chapters are on engineering and selecting workable designs. This is followed by engineering economics to forecast system costs in terms of future costs or translate future costs to present costs. It also introduces equation fitting to model the behavior of subsystem components based on data from a catalog. The system modeling is also discussed wherein the functional flow diagram is shown indicating mass transfer and work inputs/outputs from black box type unit components. It also teaches how to simulate the model which helps in sensitivity studies before or after optimization. Mathematical optimization methods such as Lagrange Multipliers, Search Methods and Linear Programming among others are presented.
MEE571M Advanced Heat Transfer The course deals mainly with the design of thermal systems which includes project, modeling, simulation and optimization. The system simulation has become an accepted tool for energy analysis of power generation, air- conditioning, refrigeration and other thermal processing plants. Simulation is often used in the design or development stage to evaluate energy requirements of the proposed system or to explore potential savings in first cost. The acceptance of optimization techniques helps the engineers to choose the most economical design.
MEE625M Experimental Techniques in Combustion Engineering This course deals with the experimental techniques that are employed when conducting research in combustion. Methods on how to use commonly used equipment and sensors are discussed.
MEE627M Foundation of Advanced Fluid Mechanics for ME This subject covers a survey of principal concepts and methods of fluid dynamics which include mass conservation, momentum and energy equations for continua; Navier-Stokes equation for viscous flows; Similarity and dimensional analysis; boundary layers and separation; circulation and vorticity theorems; potential flow and introduction to turbulence including identification of lift and drag coefficients.
MEE633M Energy Engineering This course introduces the concept of energy engineering through various case studies and specialized applications. The course walks the students through the process of performing such analysis, starting from sourcing of data, to developing the numerical model, to interpreting results, and to writing a research article report.
MEE635M Energy Systems Modelling and Design This module equips students with an appreciation of energy systems modeling and the foundational knowledge and skills needed to pursue research and independently enhance themselves in the said field. The discussions emphasize the practical application of theoretical tools to address real world challenges. Whenever possible, it discusses studies and projects that were actually applied to technology development, planning and design and policy analysis and development. Students are required to do an energy systems modeling project at the end of the course.
