Students may also be asked to attend alternative classes, do independent study or go on field trips, where appropriate. |
| MEE825M | Introduction to Nanotechnology for ME | Nanotechnology is an emerging field of applied science that engages almost every technical discipline in biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering – in the study and application of extremely tiny materials with particle sizes ranging from ~1-100 nm. This course will cover the fundamentals of nanoscience and nanotechnology from historical development, concepts and principles to nanomaterial manufacturing and property characterization, and the application of nanotechnology in food science, agriculture, environment, and other applications. |
| MEE626M | Computational Fluid Dynamics in Mechanical Engineering | This subject covers various computational fluid dynamics concepts and methodologies applied to the design and analysis of mechanical systems. Techniques are illustrated using case studies through a variety of learning strategies, including lectures on theoretical foundations and problem-based learning through realistic case studies solved with appropriate computer software. Students may also be asked to attend alternative classes related to the topic. |
| MEE570M | Advanced Thermodynamics | This subject covers reacting mixtures and combustion, chemical and phase equilibrium as well as design of thermal systems. In thermal system design, the two first chapters are on engineering and selecting workable designs. This is followed by engineering economics to forecast system costs in terms of future costs or translate future costs to present costs. It also introduces equation fitting to model the behavior of subsystem components based on data from a catalog. The system modeling is also discussed wherein the functional flow diagram is shown indicating mass transfer and work inputs/outputs from black box type unit components. It also teaches how to simulate the model which helps in sensitivity studies before or after optimization. Mathematical optimization methods such as Lagrange Multipliers, Search Methods and Linear Programming among others are presented. |
| MEE571M | Advanced Heat Transfer | The course deals mainly with the design of thermal systems which includes project, modeling, simulation and optimization. The system simulation has become an accepted tool for energy analysis of power generation, air- conditioning, refrigeration and other thermal processing plants. Simulation is often used in the design or development stage to evaluate energy requirements of the proposed system or to explore potential savings in first cost. The acceptance of optimization techniques helps the engineers to choose the most economical design. |
| MEE625M | Experimental Techniques in Combustion Engineering | This course deals with the experimental techniques that are employed when conducting research in combustion. Methods on how to use commonly used equipment and sensors are discussed. |
