RESEARCH CENTERS ADVANCING ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY AT DE LA SALLE UNIVERSITY
Academic Year 2024-2025
As part of its commitment to advancing sustainable development and environmental stewardship, De La Salle University has several dedicated research centers that serve as institutional platforms for sustainability-focused inquiry and innovation These centers strengthen undergraduate and graduate curricula by enabling interdisciplinary collaboration, supporting scientific advancement, and generating solutions that address complex environmental challenges. Through these efforts, the University ensures that sustainability is embedded not only in instruction but also in its research and knowledge production functions.
A key institution in this effort is the Center for Natural Science and Environmental Research (CENSER), which functions as a central research facility for environmental and scientific studies within the University. Established through the consolidation of the Environmental Research Center and the Marine Biological Station, CENSER was designed to enhance research coordination and build a critical mass of sustainability-focused scholarship. The center promotes interdisciplinary collaboration through its specialized operational units, including the Molecular Science Unit Laboratory, High Performance Computing Laboratory, Materials Science Unit, and Biodiversity Unit. Through these units, CENSER supports a wide range of research areas such as environmental science, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem management, and resource sustainability, contributing to both local and global environmental knowledge.
Complementing this is the Center for Engineering and Sustainable Development Research (CESDR), which serves as a hub for engineering innovation and sustainability-oriented technological development. CESDR advances research in experimental engineering, industrial systems modeling, and the design of innovative processes and products that promote resource efficiency and environmental responsibility. By fostering partnerships with industry, government, and academic institutions, the center facilitates the translation of research into practical applications that address real-world sustainability challenges. Its work supports the development of sustainable technologies and strengthens the role of engineering in driving inclusive and environmentally responsible development.
The Br. Alfred Shields FSC Ocean Research Center (SHORE) Center generates knowledge and technologies that foster good stewardship of the seas and coastlines for community development and social transformation, particularly among the youth and disadvantaged members of coastal communities. The Center has its own dedicated FTE staff that supports the day-to-day functions and operations, including training and community engagement activities.
Through these research centers, De La Salle University institutionalizes sustainability within its research agenda by integrating scientific, technological, and ecological perspectives. These centers not only generate new knowledge but also contribute to capacity building, policy development, and the promotion of sustainable practices across sectors. In doing so, the University reinforces its role as a key contributor to environmental sustainability and innovation, aligned with global development goals.
