THE SUSTAINABLE STUDENT SOCIETY AT DE LA SALLE UNIVERSITY

De La Salle University (DLSU) advances environmental sustainability not only through its academic and research initiatives but also through active student engagement and leadership. Student-led organizations play a critical role in translating sustainability principles into action by fostering environmental awareness, shaping student behavior, and supporting institutional sustainability efforts. These organizations serve as platforms for advocacy, capacity building, and community engagement, enabling students to actively participate in addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable practices within and beyond the University.
Among these is the DLSU Environmental and Conservation Organization (DLSU ECO), an officially recognized student organization within the University network of student groups. Established on October 1, 2013, at the Laguna campus, the organization focuses on promoting environmental awareness and sustainability through data-driven advocacy and student engagement. Its initiatives are designed to deepen students’ understanding of environmental issues such as resource management, conservation, and climate change, while also encouraging behavioral change and participation in sustainability efforts. Through campaigns, collaborative projects, and community-oriented activities, DLSU ECO extends its impact beyond the campus by engaging external partners and contributing to broader environmental initiatives. These efforts reflect a growing emphasis on youth-led environmental action, where students are not only participants but also drivers of sustainability initiatives.
Complementing this is the Commission on Environmental Protection (CEP), a student-led body under the De La Salle University Student Government (USG), which plays a distinct role in integrating sustainability into student governance structures. As part of the University’s student governance system, the Commission contributes to shaping environmentally responsible practices by organizing sustainability campaigns, supporting eco-friendly initiatives, and advocating for greener policies in student activities and institutional processes. Its function goes beyond awareness-building, as it also promotes accountability and institutional alignment by embedding environmental considerations into decision-making within student-led systems. Through this governance-oriented approach, the CEP strengthens the institutionalization of sustainability by linking advocacy with policy influence and operational practices.
These student organizations operate within a broader institutional context where sustainability is increasingly recognized as a shared responsibility across academic, administrative, and student sectors. University initiatives emphasize extending environmental impact beyond campus boundaries by engaging communities and promoting sustainable practices in surrounding areas . In this context, student organizations serve as key enablers of grassroots participation, bridging institutional sustainability goals with everyday student actions and community engagement.
