About the Bienvenido N. Santos Creative Writing Center (BNSCWC)

The Center was established in 1991 with the intention of formalizing and implementing the University’s objectives of contributing to the literary development of the country, in general, and improving the literary skills and expertise of La Salle students, faculty, and non-teaching staff, in particular.
Considering the humanist thrust of Lasallian education, the Center is viewed as an imperative institution that affirms the University’s involvement in the total education of its community. While training encompasses all aspects of human development, the Center answers the need for artistic training and literary outlets for persons with creative writing potentials. This fulfills the humanistic, artistic aspect of the University’s commitment towards fostering literary excellence within and beyond the campus.

Vision

The BNSCWC believes in the value of the work and vision of creative writers as well as artists and critics, and serves to hone creative skills for theadvancement of the culture at the university, the country, and the world.

The BNSCWC Difference

BNSCWC promotes and affirms the arts. And it does so with a strong commitment to

1. encourage interdisciplinary dialogues among practitioners coming from different fields and
2. create a sustainable and equitable world.

Activities

The Center holds several annual workshops for creative writers (Iyas), art and cultural critics (Kritika), creative nonfiction writing workshops for healthcare professionals and medical interns, young screenwriters’ workshop, young writers’ workshop for local languages, etc. The center also supports Lasallian writers and beyond through writing grants, fellowships, and various other forms of support. Aside from these, the Center also organizes various writing competitions, writers’ events, fora, and book talks and releases various publications on the art and literary heritage of the Philippines.

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, and Performance

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance is an international, double-blind peer-reviewed journal that seeks to publish cutting-edge articles in the areas and intersections of Literary, Cultural, and Performance Studies. It is an open-access journal that comes out twice a year, normally in April and October, and is indexed in the MLA International Bibliography and the Andrew Gonzales Philippine Citation Index (AGPCI). As a Philippine-based journal, Akda publishes articles written in English and in Filipino with abstracts translated into English. While most of the contributions focus on literary, cultural, and performance studies in the Philippines, we especially welcome articles that will inaugurate new and dynamic directions for scholarly inquiry on the literary and cultural production of the Asian region. We publish articles that may potentially be relevant to the concerns of the various national and cultural contexts in Southeast Asia, Asia-Pacific, and the larger Asian region. Our commitment to diversity and to multicultural dialogue fosters Philippine and Asian research that is locally engaged and attentive to rethinking literary, cultural, and performance phenomena while providing an international platform for regional voices.
The journal is managed by the Department of Literature. University fellow Dr. Dinah Roma is the editor-in-chief, and Dr. Carlos Piocos III and Dr. Jose Kervin Cesar B. Calabias serve as managing editors.
