Dr. Allan N. Soriano is a distinguished Filipino chemical engineer, researcher, and academic leader currently serving as Full Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering at De La Salle University (DLSU), Manila. With more than two decades of experience in engineering education and research, he has established a strong international reputation for his contributions to thermophysical property modeling, carbon dioxide capture technologies, environmental remediation, and chemical process modeling.
Dr. Soriano earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering (Cum Laude) from the Mapúa Institute of Technology in 2000, where he was awarded the Don Oscar B. Mapúa Silver Scholarship Medal in recognition of his outstanding academic performance. Early in his career, he was also recognized for his dedication to student development, receiving the Outstanding NSTP–CWTS Facilitator Award (2006) from the School of Chemical, Biological and Materials Engineering and Sciences (SOCIP), Mapúa Institute of Technology.
He completed his Master of Engineering in Chemical Engineering at Mapúa and later obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering from Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU), Taiwan. His doctoral work on thermophysical properties and vapor–liquid equilibrium systems relevant to carbon dioxide absorption processes earned him the 2009 Outstanding International PhD Researcher Award of CYCU.
Dr. Soriano’s research achievements quickly gained international recognition. In 2009, he won 3rd Place in the Best Research Paper Competition (Poster Category) during the 56th Annual Conference of the Institute of Chemical Engineers, Chinese Taipei, and 1st and 4th Place in the Best Research Paper Competition (Oral Category) at the 16th Regional Symposium of Chemical Engineering hosted by the University of Santo Tomas. His continued research excellence led to the Prof. Yen-Ping Shi Research Paper Award (2010) from the Institute of Chemical Engineers, Chinese Taipei.
Following his doctoral studies, he served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Chung Yuan Christian University (2009–2010) and later received Visiting Professorship appointments at CYCU in 2011 and 2013, strengthening international collaboration in chemical engineering research.
Dr. Soriano’s scientific achievements have been widely recognized in the Philippines. He received the prestigious Outstanding Young Scientist (OYS) Award in 2011 from the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), Philippines, followed by the 2012 Outstanding Chemical Engineer Award (OChEA) for Research and Development from the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE). His research contributions to sustainability were further acknowledged through the 2012 Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) Green Award.
His outstanding academic leadership and professional contributions have also been recognized through the 2013 Chemical Engineering Board Recognition Award and the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) Service Award, as well as the 2013 YGC Values Exemplar Award on Loyalty from the Yuchengco Group of Companies. In 2015, he received the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) Achievement Award and the prestigious Outstanding Mapúan (TOM) Award from the National Alumni Association of Mapúa.
Dr. Soriano has also received significant research support, including the NAST–Outstanding Young Scientist Research Grant (2013–2014). His scholarly influence is reflected in international rankings, including being ranked 27th among scientists in Philippine institutions based on Google Scholar citations in 2016 (Webometrics) and ranked 74th among scientists in the Philippines out of more than 13,800 researchers according to the AD Scientific Index (2025).
In recognition of his professional stature and sustained contributions to the chemical engineering profession, Dr. Soriano was elevated as a Fellow of the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE Fellows) in 2023, one of the highest honors conferred by the organization.
Dr. Soriano’s research interests span several key areas of chemical engineering, including, (1) Thermophysical property measurement and modeling, (2) Carbon dioxide capture and absorption technologies, (3) Ionic liquids and advanced solvent systems, (4) Mathematical modeling and simulation of chemical processes, (5) Photocatalytic degradation of pharmaceutical and cosmetic pollutants, and (6) Drying kinetics and transport phenomena in agricultural products
He has authored and co-authored more than 90 peer-reviewed international journal publications, numerous conference papers, and a book chapter on membrane technologies for gas absorption. His work has achieved strong global impact, reflected in his Google Scholar h-index of 31 and i10-index of 45.
Throughout his career, Dr. Soriano has remained deeply committed to mentoring students, advancing engineering research, and promoting scientific excellence in the Philippines. Through his leadership, scholarship, and dedication to education, he continues to inspire the next generation of engineers to pursue innovation and develop technologies that contribute to a more sustainable and scientifically advanced society.
