THE FIRST STEPS TOWARDS GREEN ENERGY
SDG 7 (AFFORDABLE CLEAN ENERGY) REPORT
Academic Year 2023-2024
The Lasallian community aims to contribute to achieving the SDG of affordable clean energy, by continuing to promote their on-campus programs related to education and awareness on such matters. DLSU’s earlier contributions to promoting this SDG, such as the publishing of a paper in 2022 entitled as Challenges and Opportunities of Flywheel Energy Storage in the Philippines, shed light to developing more promotion on this advocacy regarding affordable clean energy. This would be recognized as a big project of DLSU partnered up with Amber Kinetics Philippines, a well-established company known for pioneering projects related to emission-free energy storage solutions.
This acclaimed 2022 collaboration between DLSU and Amber Kinetics Philippines was a springboard for more activities about affordable and clean energy throughout the academic year of 2023-2024. An example of this in the DLSU Laguna Campus is the institution of its 100% renewable energy pledge in 2023 to operationalize its renewable energy transition. Other similar programs continue to be implemented and monitored by the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) office, allowing access to more education about clean energy and climate change.
To further support SDG 7 and others, the University now also offers various courses on Climate Science and Environmental Sustainability, which provide students the opportunity to earn local and international degrees on studies of the field. Examples of such would be obtaining achievements from published projects related to advocacies on environmental SDGs, through finishing a degree on “Masters of Science in Climate Change: Science, Society, and Solutions” at the University of Manchester in the UK, or accomplishing a degree on “Bachelor of Science in Climate Science and Adaptation” at the University of Newcastle, Australia.
Through the existing programs like the 100% renewable energy pledge, as well as the development of courses on Climate Science and or Environmental Sustainability, DLSU places value on working to meet the targets of SDG 7, allowing the advocacy of affordable and clean energy to live on within campus through education, to then allow the Lasallian community to commune in environmental missions that impact communities outside of campus.
