Vision-Mission
The Department of Philosophy cultivates compassionate and dynamic individuals empowered by philosophical wisdom, capable of translating their thoughts into actions for the flourishing of the Earth and the service of humanity.
The following are the learning outcomes of the Undergraduate Philosophy program:
Teaching (Dynamic and Innovative Mentors)
- Read critically and engage with the primary philosophical writings of the most influential thinkers in the field, while exploring diverse traditions and emerging voices for an inclusive philosophical discourse.
- Cultivate a personal commitment to ongoing learning through active participation in collaborative philosophical projects promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within academic and non-academic contexts.
Advocacy (Advocacy Driven Individuals)
- Apply a variety of philosophical dispositions and methods in addressing moral, social, political, cultural, technological, and environmental problems confronting contemporary society.
- Explicate underlying assumptions in discourse and engage in meaningful dialogue with people of different faiths, beliefs, and non-beliefs, philosophical, socio-political, religious, or spiritual persuasions.
Research (Methodical and Creative Inquirer)
- Formulate and defend one’s position on issues addressed by philosophers or address criticisms and integrate them into one’s position.
- Independently or collaboratively produce philosophical research.
- Organize conferences, symposiums, and lecture series in philosophy for audiences of different orientations and persuasions.
- Integrate multi-sectoral views in scholarly outputs and presentations, using inclusive language, examples, and contexts.
Goals
The Department of Philosophy aims to:
- instill in students the open-minded, reflective, and critical attitude;
- provide them with a panoramic view of the different schools of thought and traditions in philosophy;
- impress upon them the values of intellectual humility and genuine dialogue, and
- encourage independence of thought as a path toward a more meaningful life, while being guided by this vision of adventurous inquiry.
